The Importance of Culturally Grounded Care

Las Cruces - The Importance of Culturally Grounded Care

In the journey of healing from substance use disorders, no single approach fits all. True recovery reaches beyond symptoms to touch the heart of the person, including their history, relationships, values, and sense of identity. At Las Cruces Recovery Center, this understanding shapes not only what treatment we offer but how we offer it. Because we serve individuals from throughout New Mexico—a state rich in cultural diversity and home to 23 Tribes, Nations, and Pueblos—we recognize that culture is not peripheral to healing but is central.

Why Culturally Grounded Care Matters

Culture shapes how people experience pain and resilience, how they ask for help, and how they interpret suffering. It informs community norms, spiritual practices, family ties, and patterns of support. In many communities—especially Indigenous ones—historical trauma, displacement, and systemic inequities have compounded personal struggles with substance use, leaving deep wounds that cannot be addressed by clinical interventions alone.

Culturally grounded care acknowledges this truth. It affirms that healing is not just an individual process but also one that is relational and rooted in community, tradition, and meaning-making. By honoring culture as a source of strength and resilience, we not only respect the whole person—we offer pathways to recovery that are healing, relevant, and sustainable.

How We Integrate Culture With Clinical Expertise

Las Cruces Recovery Center’s culturally grounded framework enhances our comprehensive model of care by integrating evidence-based clinical services with culturally responsive programming. This model supports recovery of the mind, body, and community, recognizing that lasting wellness arises when all parts of a person’s life are addressed.

A cornerstone of our culturally responsive services is the Wellbriety curriculum—a spiritual, community-centered approach to recovery that places healing in the context of culture, connection, and collective wisdom.

Wellbriety

Wellbriety was created to honor Indigenous teachings and traditions. At Las Cruces Recovery Center, Wellbriety is offered as part of our inclusive treatment programming and is available to individuals of all backgrounds and belief systems. Our Wellbriety groups are facilitated by staff members certified in these curricula, ensuring that programming is delivered with integrity, respect, and cultural humility.

Medicine Wheel and 12 Steps

The Medicine Wheel & 12 Steps curriculum, developed by White Bison, offers a culturally appropriate adaptation of the familiar 12-Step model. Rooted in the Teachings of the Medicine Wheel, the Cycle of Life, and the Four Laws of Change, this approach weaves Indigenous wisdom with time-tested recovery principles.

Rather than viewing recovery merely as abstinence, this curriculum frames it as a lifelong journey of restoring balance in four key dimensions of life: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Participants are guided to see recovery as harmony within themselves, with others, and with the world around them. While especially meaningful for Indigenous participants, the insights of this curriculum resonate across cultures and experiences, offering universal lessons in self-awareness, resilience, and purposeful living.

Warrior Down

The Warrior Down program builds a peer-to-peer response system grounded in accountability, shared responsibility, and community support. Participants learn to recognize signs of struggle in themselves and others, offer meaningful support, and connect their peers to appropriate resources. While rooted in Indigenous values and relational practices, the principles of Warrior Down—community, service, connection—are relevant to anyone who believes in the power of mutual aid and collective healing.

This program also supports individuals as they transition from treatment back into daily life, offering tools to maintain recovery and help others along the way. In doing so, Warrior Down reinforces the idea that healing is not a solo endeavor but a collective act of care.

Healing Grief and Intergenerational Trauma

Unresolved grief often lies at the heart of emotional pain, addiction, and spiritual disconnection. In many Native communities, the legacy of historical trauma has created profound layers of grief, loss, and wounded identity—challenges that affect both individuals and families across generations.

Mending Broken Hearts is a culturally grounded program that invites participants to explore the impact of grief through guided reflection, storytelling, and cultural teachings. Using the metaphor of a “sick forest,” the curriculum helps individuals see how unprocessed grief can spread through families and communities, draining strength and resilience.

Participants are supported in processing loss, releasing shame, and reconnecting with cultural strengths. Although developed for Native communities in the United States and Canada, the teachings of Mending Broken Hearts are deeply relevant to anyone who has faced trauma, loss, or a disruption of meaning.
